[Employee Engagement] 2023 Global Employee Engagement Rankings

😕Hong Kong Ranks Among the Bottom 3 Globally, Singapore Rank Surpasses Hong Kong, and Japan Surprisingly Takes the Lowest Spot🤔

✳️ 9.4 out of 10 Hong Kong Employees are "Disengaged" ☠️

According to the "2023 Global Workplace Report" released by Gallup, a renowned US data analytics company, only 1 out of 4 employees worldwide is actively engaged at work. Among developed countries, the United States ranks first with 34% of employees being engaged, while Hong Kong ranks among the bottom three globally (123rd) with only 6% of employees being engaged. On average, out of every 10 Hong Kong employees, less than one claims to love their job.

✳️ Singapore Ranks Significantly Higher than Hong Kong, Japan and Italy Trail Behind 🅱️

In comparison to its "rival", Hong Kong, Singapore scores twice as high at 13% in employee engagement within the Southeast Asian region. The countries with the lowest employee engagement globally are Japan and Italy, both with approximately 5% of employees expressing their engagement. The report also highlights that employees in developing or underdeveloped countries tend to be more engaged, with Mali (47%), Senegal (41%), Mongolia (38%), El Salvador (37%), and Romania (35%) ranking in the top five.

✳️ 31% of Hong Kongers Consider 2023 a Good Time to Switch Jobs 💼

Despite Hong Kong's lower rankings globally, there is cause for celebration as the city has shown improvements in stress levels, anger, and job climate. Notably, there is a significant increase in the perception that now is a good time to switch jobs, with 31% of Hong Kongers expressing this sentiment, a 9% increase compared to 2022. It is expected that more Hong Kong employees will "vote with their feet" and seek new opportunities.

✳️ Employee Engagement is the Best Talent Retention Strategy 🧱

Gallup's report emphasizes the crucial role of employee engagement in talent retention. Engaged employees have lower turnover intentions (43% vs. 61%) and are more likely to negotiate higher salaries when considering new job opportunities (31% vs. 22%), thereby increasing the cost for competitors to headhunt them and protect their current employers.

The report also highlights that monetary factors like compensation and benefits are not the primary drivers of employee engagement (28%). Instead, non-monetary factors such as employee well-being, workplace culture, and recognition play a more significant role (57%) in improving employee engagement.
