45% of Employees claim WFH Increases Stress :

Overtime work, Social Isolation, and Extra Work Proof as Main Factors

While the advantages of working from home have been widely celebrated, recent research sheds light on a lesser-known truth: remote work can sometimes be more stressful than working from the office. According to Gallup 2023 State of Work Report, a striking 45% of remote employees experience stress in their day-to-day work, compared to only 38% of their on-site counterparts. Let's explore the three key reasons behind this revelation:

1️⃣ Increased Working Hours: 🕧

In an office setting, employees can easily demonstrate their dedication by physically being present. However, remote workers face the challenge of relying solely on their work output to showcase their commitment. Shockingly, 70% of remote employees now find themselves working on weekends, leading to an average of 2.5 additional work hours per day when working from home.

2️⃣ Social Isolation 😔:

A staggering 61% of remote employees confess to missing the face-to-face interactions they once enjoyed with their colleagues in the office. Although virtual meetings bridge some gaps, they often revolve around work-related matters, leaving little room for casual conversation and relationship building.

3️⃣ Proof of Productivity 💼:

Managers may unconsciously perceive remote workers as less diligent due to their absence in the office. Consequently, remote employees feel compelled to provide additional evidence of their productivity, such as attending online meetings, logging KPIs, and regularly reporting work results. As a result, a considerable 67% of remote workers admit to feeling pressured to be available around the clock.

While this report underscores the potential downsides of remote work, Gallup emphasizes the need for HR leaders to reflect on whether the increased stress is attributable to the work environment or management practices. After all, no physical location can rectify poor management, and even the traditional office setup alone cannot create a truly exceptional organizational culture.
